The battle of veterans Silva and Ronaldo in the Manchester United game at Chelsea was billed as a crucial battle before the Premier League showdown at Stamford Bridge.

That was until United decided to bench Ronaldo amid their packed current schedule, as Michael Carrick picked a defence-minded team in London.

Naturally, the Portuguese superstar who has scored 10 goals for United this campaign was summoned from the bench against table-topping Silva and company.

It came after Jadon Sancho had opened the scoring and before Jorginho equalised from the penalty spot.

Citing bold pre-match comments from Scholes, a Chelsea fan account on Instagram posted about Silva's battle with Ronaldo and the Brazilian, now 37, wasted no time in issuing his tongue-in-cheek response.

An initial post from @chelseapulse read: "According to Paul Scholes, facing Thiago Silva would have been easy for Cristiano Ronaldo [he said it before the game]."

Coupled with laughing face emojis, the verified @thiagosilva account replied: "It is always easy, especially for those who have stopped playing!"

Having scored 118 goals and provided 69 assists during a first memorable spell with United between 2003 and 2009, Ronaldo touched back down in the Premier League on deadline day.

Silva, meanwhile, signed for Chelsea last summer after previously playing for AC Milan and PSG.
