Three pundits all back Aston Villa in Manchester United score predictions

Manchester|January 15, 2022

Steven Gerrard's return to Old Trafford ended in defeat as he bowed out of the FA Cup in his first attempt as a manager after Scott McTominay's first-half header.

But despite the win, United failed to pull up any trees as old habits die hard for Ralf Rangnick and his players.

Last time out in the Premier League they were left disappointed as they were edged out by a Joao Moutinho goal against Bruno Lage's Wolves.

Worryingly for Rangnick's side, three major pundits expect more disappointment as they cast their predictions. Here's what they had to say.

Paul Merson - Sportskeeda

"Manchester United are currently all over the place and I called this a long time ago. I know they've won a few games under Ralf Rangnick but their performances have been terrible, so I don't see them beating Aston Villa in the Premier League this weekend," he wrote.

"Villa are 14th in the table but I can't see Manchester United winning - that tells you everything you need to know. A good team always beats a bunch of individuals, and that's what Manchester United are at the moment - a bunch of individuals.

"Look at their last two Premier League away games - a late penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo to beat Norwich City and a draw against Newcastle! As for the recently concluded FA Cup tie, Villa were much better in that game despite losing and I expect them to take Manchester United to the cleaners this time around."

Prediction: Aston Villa 3-1 Manchester United.

Michael Owen - BetVictor

"What a week its been for Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa in the transfer market. Lucas Digne should prove to be an excellent signing at left-back, hes experienced and has superb delivery," the former United striker said.

"Who would have thought that Philippe Coutinho would end up playing for Aston Villa? Thats a brilliant signing for Villa and a signal of intent by the club.

"Performances havent been great at Old Trafford since Ralf Rangnick took over. United start an easier run of fixtures now but there has to be a lot of improvement shown.

"I can see Villa edging this. Villa were probably a little unlucky in the Cup game last week and with the home crowd behind them, should win here.

Prediction: Aston Villa 2-1 Manchester United.

Mark Lawrenson - BBC Sport

Mark Lawrenson told BBC Sport: "New Villa midfielder Philippe Coutinho will be available, but I don't know whether he will start because he has not played many minutes recently. He'll probably be on the bench and if they need a lift - and a trick or two - they can bring him on.

"It is United who have got more problems at the moment, though. I really thought we would see an improvement under Ralf Rangnick.

"Their results haven't been that bad, other than their loss to Wolves at the start of the year, but their performances have mostly been poor and there are obviously some deep-rooted problems inside the club that need to be sorted out."

Prediction: Aston Villa 2-1 Manchester United.

Joleon Lescott - LiveScore

"A repeat of Mondays FA Cup clash and Villa will feel they deserved a lot more from that one. Uniteds general performances havent been good enough and Villa have a great chance of some quick revenge," he wrote in his LiveScore column.

Prediction: Aston Villa win.
