Al Ahly sports director Sayed Abdelhafiz has thanked Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca for according the Egyptian team a warm reception ahead of the two teams’ CAF Champions League final meeting on Monday at Mohammed V Stadium.
“Sayed Abdelhafiz, the club’s director of football, thanked the board members of TAS de Casablanca, board of Aïn Sebaâ, and the representatives of Stade El Arbi Zaouli for their warm reception to the team in Morocco,” Al Ahly statement reads.
“Additionally, Abdelhafiz made sure to stress that Al Ahly appreciates the help and support from the above-mentioned parties ever since the team’s arrival in Morocco.”
The build up to the match has been characterized by tension after the holders wrote the Court of Arbitration for Sports challenging CAF’s decision that the final be played in Morocco alone and not also in Egypt in the second leg.
Senegal and Morocco expressed interested to host the final months ago before the former pulled out and in a dramatic situation, it was a team from Morocco that qualified for the final.
CAF decided on the one-legged final in 2019.
Al Ahly felt playing in Morocco would put Wydad at an advantage but CAS rejected the appeal.
