Al Ahly head coach Marcel Koller has explained his criteria for selecting the club’s squad for next month’s 2022 FIFA Club World Cup finals in Morocco.
The Egyptian football powerhouse will compete in the global tournament by virtue of being the runners-up of the 2021/22 CAF Champions League.
Each team will name a 23-man squad (three of whom have to be goalkeepers) for the World Cup and injury replacements are allowed until 24 hours before the team’s first match.
Koller explained that he will select his squad based on an assessment of the players’ condition and the readiness of each player.
“The coach stressed that he will decide the list of the team traveling to Morocco to participate in the Club World Cup, based on an assessment of the players’ condition and the readiness of each player,” a club statement read.
Al Ahly are set to take on OFC Champions League winners Auckland City of New Zealand in a first round clash at the Ibn Batouta Stadium in Tangier on February 1.
The Red Eagles finished third in the last two Club World Cup tournaments.
