Real Sociedad have been dealt a massive blow with the news that new signing Sadiq Umar is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a serious leg injury on Sunday.
The Nigeria international, who scored on his debut against Atletico Madrid, was forced off just 38 minutes into La Real’s 2-1 defeat to Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.
Umar went to ground after attempting to make a challenge on the opposing player and he had to be helped off the pitch by the medical staff.
Sociedad head coach Imanol Alguacil conceded after the match that the images didn’t look good and their worst fears were confirmed on Monday when scans revealed a ruptured cruciate ligament.
The 24-year-old striker is set to go under the knife and will then begin the rehabilitation process, with suggestions that he could be ruled out for the season.
“Sadiq Umar suffered a right knee sprain during the Getafe-RS match, held yesterday. After the tests carried out today on the player, he has been diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in the right leg,” a statement on the club’s official website read.
“He will a start a physiotherapy treatment. However, he will undergo surgical treatment.”
