Egyptian Premier League giants Al Ahly have confirmed Badr Benoun’s departure from the team. The Moroccan defender will join Qatar SC.
Benoun has been an integral part of Al Ahly’s defensive lineup since arriving in Cairo. And he instantly became a fan favourite. However, injury kept the 28-year-old sidelined for months.
With just 11 appearances this season, Benoun fell down the pecking order to Yasser Ibrahim, Mohamed Abdelmonem, Ayman Ashraf, and Rami Rabia.
Recent reports revealed that Qatar Sports Club reportedly submitted a bid of $2.5m to acquire the player’s services, which could rise up to $3m with bonuses.
“Badr Benoun made a request to leave the club. He showed appreciation for the club’s support. But he said that he can’t continue his journey with the team due to personal reasons.” The club confirmed Benoun’s departure in an official statement on Friday.
“Benoun spoke to Soares as the decision is the head coach’s. And Soares agreed to let Benoun leave as it wouldn’t benefit the team to force him to stay.
“As a result, Amir Tawfik spoke with Qatar SC officials. And Badr has traveled to Qatar in order to finalize the deal.” Continued Al Ahly’s statement.
