The United forward was in disbelief at the red card, with manager Ten Hag also furious on the sidelines. Bruno Fernandes was also questioning the referee but he was unwavering in his decision.

Speaking on commentary for TNT Sports while the VAR review was taking place, Robbie Savage said: “That, for me, is a red card. Initially I thought he just turned, but I think that is a red card. When you see it from that other angle – he has gone to protect the ball, and by doing that he has stamped on his shin and that is 100 per cent a red card.”
