The former Ajax midfielder signed for United in 2020 and has only totted up 21 minutes this season. Even a reunion with Erik ten Hag – who nurtured the Netherlands international in Amsterdam – has been unable to revive his career at Old Trafford after he was cast aside by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Solskjaer paid 40million for van de Beek before the 2020/2021 campaign and the player has started just six games for United in the Premier League. He was brutally axed from their Champions League squad this season and backed to leave this summer.
As it played out, there were no takers for the 26-year-old at that juncture and van de Beek must now wait for the market to reopen. When it does, though, ex-Premier League and Netherlands winger Boudewijn Zenden wants the midfielder to be selfish in his next move.
Zenden told TG Casino: “Whatever he does next is his choice. He needs to find something that suits him.
“His marriage to United has never really been great. He&aposs never been an undisputed starter, and that makes it really hard because players want to be important and play a lot of games.
“That will help you perform better but, if you don&apost play a lot and you have to start playing, that makes it harder as you don&apost have minutes under your belt.”
