Ten Hag has made seven changes to the side that was dismantled by City, with only Andre Onana, Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire keeping their places largely due to a lack of any other options in defence. Despite the different side, the manager is still aiming to get to continue United&aposs defence of the cup.

“To get through to the next round,” he told MUTV when asked what his thinking was behind the selection. “We have a strong squad so we can make choices and today I think we have a strong selection, a strong team and we have to get to the next round.”

When it was then put to Ten Hag it&aposs good for the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford to get a rest, the manager revealed he was more eager to give other players a chance than give regular starters a night off. “I don&apost know if it&aposs really needed because they are fit,” he said. “But of course to keep them fresh all through the season but also to give other players the opportunity to give their performances because they are giving everything.

“They are always helping and supporting the team, every training they perform, therefore they deserve a place in the team. We don&apost give opportunities, it&aposs well deserved.”
