Erik ten Hag has chance to give two Manchester United players what they deserve – Jack Flintham

Should Andre Onana not be in a position to feature, new signing Altay Bayindir is all but guaranteed to take on the responsibility. However, the knock to Marcus Rashford was of much deeper concern.

Due to others&apos poor form, Rashford was already playing out of position on the right to allow the younger Alejandro Garnacho to take up his preferred role on the left. While the winger&aposs issue is not thought to be catastrophic, the trip to Merseyside provides a chance to give the England international and one of his teammates what they deserve.

It must be admitted Rashford&aposs form has not been up to scratch this season. Where last year he was confident, this campaign has been littered with mediocre performances and he has not clocked up the statistics we have been accustomed to seeing.

Rashford has been due a break from the starting line-up to recharge and while nobody wishes that would have come from an injury scare, this is a chance for Erik ten Hag to do just that. The question now is, who could replace him?

Antony is the favourite but his performances have been worse than Rashford&aposs. However there is one man who deserves a chance, Facundo Pellistri.

The Uruguayan&aposs most recent display for United saw him grab a crucial assist as the Reds beat Fulham 1-0 at Craven Cottage. In those 27 minutes on the park, he showed more promise than Antony&aposs preceding hour and it was thus baffling to see him remain on the bench as the Brazilian came on against Luton Town last time out.

What&aposs more, Ten Hag has already admitted previously he should have given Pellistri a fair crack at the whip. Back in March, the Dutchman spoke highly of the winger&aposs performance against Real Betis in the Europa League.

“He is the example by deserving his position by performance on the training [ground],” Ten Hag said. “And I said the other day, I did not select him for Liverpool and it was not even totally justified because he was training that well.

“Now this was his moment to come on because of a longer period he performed in training.”

What has become clear during Ten Hag&aposs tenure is the importance of high-level performance at Carrington.

As Jadon Sancho has discovered, no player should just assume to waltz through training and get picked to start. Therefore, upon his return from international duty, it will be up to Pellistri to leave Ten Hag in no doubt who he should pick to replace Rashford if needs be.
