Jonny Evans gives brutally honest assessment of horror night for Manchester United defender

Evans, who completed a return to Old Trafford this summer, had an eventful 90 minutes for his country as opponents Slovenia swept them aside on Thursday night. Northern Ireland were beaten 4-2 in Ljubljana – as Evans scored at the right and wrong end while winning his 91st cap at Stadion Stozice.

That followed his cameo for United during their 3-1 defeat to Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon. Northern Ireland are sitting in fifth position in Group H for Euro 2024 qualification, having picked up just three points from five games, with Kazakhstan to come on Sunday afternoon (2pm).

During his post-match interview, Evans was asked if his country&aposs chances of qualifying had gone. The 35-year-old said: “I think so, we had to win against Slovenia to give ourselves any chance of that.”

Evans continued: “It was difficult to take in terms of defensively. That&aposs something we have always been solid and quite strong with, I didn&apost think I played great myself.

“I know I scored a goal, but my own personal performance probably wasn&apost up to scratch. I&aposm experienced enough and wise enough to admit that.

“We cannot be giving away cheap goals at the start of the game like we did. Even during the game, I was thinking this is not a typical Northern Ireland match, especially away from home.

“Possibly, we have to look at our game-management. The two times we got back in the game, maybe we got too carried away and left ourselves too open.

“We have to keep together and keep progressing, we have to build more connections between the players. There are promising signs there from an attacking perspective.”

One of the stand-out kits of the new season, the base colour of the adidas shirt is green with white stripes and maroon lines ensuring United will boast one of the most eye-catching shirts in the game for the 2023/2024 campaign.
