Marcus Rashford explains his role in controversial Manchester United equaliser vs Man City

United recorded an excellent victory over their neighbours on Saturday as they came from behind to win 2-1 at Old Trafford. However, there was an element of controversy surrounding Bruno Fernandes&apos equalising goal.

Rashford was stood in an offside position when a pass was sent in his direction and though he clearly chased the ball, drew defenders towards him and was readying to shoot, he didn&apost touch it and instead eventually left it for Fernandes to sweep home. City were apoplectic but despite their complaints referee Stuart Attwell gave the goal after consulting with his assistant.

Rashford spoke about the role he played in the goal and explained why he thinks there was no question about it being given. He told MUTV: “I just stopped. Obviously, if I thought I was onside then I can go on take the ball towards goal. But I realised I&aposd probably gone a little bit early and I just slowed down completely, I don&apost think I was in the line or blocking any of their defenders so I didn&apost know why it wouldn&apost stand.

“If I was maybe blocking one of the defenders coming back in or something like that I could understand it but I didn&apost. I just stopped running forward basically. So I think the goal should have stood and I&aposm pleased that it did stand.”

One admission Rashford did make, however, is that he thought City were the better team on the day but United did brilliantly to persevere and turn the game on its head.

It&aposs a massive game,” he said. “It was important for us to win this game. One, it keeps the momentum going and two it is a big game for the fans. It will do a lot for us. We have obviously shown progression since we last faced them. So to get the win today solidifies that, and hopefully we can keep going as a team and that was what it was today.

“I think they played better than us. They were a lot better on the ball. But we stuck together and we suffered out there on the pitch and we did that as a team and we got the win in the end.
