Nani criticises Manchester United squad as he defends Bruno Fernandes

The midfielders status as club captain has recently been questioned by some, including former Reds skipper Roy Keane who said the 29-year-old is not up to the task. Some have questioned his in-game mannerisms, pointing to his hefty tackles and yellow card in the closing stages of Sundays Manchester derby defeat.

Gary Neville says Fernandes&apos constant chattering to officials is not helping his cause and suggested Erik ten Hag was wrong to give him the captaincy in the first place, albeit both he and Keane highlighted the technical qualities Fernandes possesses.

The Portuguese playmaker took over the armband from Harry Maguire full-time just over three months ago having worn it for most of last season when his predecessor was benched. Nani believes the heat on countryman Fernandes needs to be turned down given his displays since being officially handed the role.

He mooted that the fault lies elsewhere with other players not living up to the captains levels. Nani told B24: Manchester United have great players. We have Bruno Fernandes. If Bruno Fernandes wasnt playing well, Id criticise him too.
