News From Manchester: Cristiano Ronaldo blamed for Manchester United dressing room ‘disharmony’

The Portuguese ace faced his fair share of critics during the 2021/22 season. However, he did finish as United's top goalscorer with 24 in all competitions.

Despite this, former Liverpool winger John Barnes has criticised Ronaldo for his attitude this season. Speaking to the Mirror at a William Hill event, Barnes explained: “He causes disunity and disharmony.

“When the ball does not come to him, he throws his hands up in the air, thats a great example, isnt it? The harmony at Manchester United is a problem and who causes that disharmony?

“He walks around as though its the rest of them, Im doing my job. Thats not what a leader does – thats what someone who does it for himself does.”

Barnes continued: “The fans love him and when things dont go his way, hes like 'its not my fault'. That is not what a team is all about.

“So we know Ronaldo has done well for himself but would you rather have no one scoring 20 goals a season and United finishing higher up? I think they would be higher up if they had a better team.

“If the harmony is better, Ronaldo wont score the goals but the team would be a better team and would be winning matches. Would United be a better team without Ronaldo? I think they would. You think they will be better if Ronaldo stays next season? No chance.”

Erik ten Hag has already insisted he would like to find a place for Ronaldo at Old Trafford next season. Steve McClaren, United's new assistant, has also previously suggested that the Portuguese legend is a 'solution' rather than a problem.
