News From Manchester: Erik ten Hag can build ideal Manchester United starting XI after £200m transfer spend

United had their worst Premier League season to date with a measly 58 points accumulated over the course of the 2021/22 campaign. Not much solace could be found in the cups either following early exits in the League and FA Cup before a meagre defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

Looking ahead to the summer, Ten Hag will be fully aware of what is needed this summer to return United to the heights they achieved under Sir Alex Ferguson. However this could involve a significant number of new additions.

MEN Sport recently outlined five signings United could make for 200m this summer and here we take a look at what a dream Ten Hag United XI could look like next campaign with those players involved.

Goalkeeper – David de Gea

After the season he has had it is unlikely that any Reds fans would be against De Gea starting in goal for Ten Hag. The Spaniard has been one of the star performers this campaign and you can only imagine how well he may do with a revamped defence in front of him.

Defenders – Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Jurrien Timber, Diogo Dalot

Ten Hag may be tempted to look towards Ajax for a solution to United's defensive troubles. Martinez and Timber have both been stars for the Dutchman in the Eredivisie and bringing both men in could provide some familiarity to the spine of the team.

Shaw and Dalot are both likely to be in Ten Hag's plans next season. Should the former be able to find the performances he creates for the national team, Ten Hag could be on to a winner.

Midfielders – Declan Rice, Frenkie de Jong, Donny van de Beek, Bruno Fernandes

Rice may well be a long shot but this is a dream lineup. The Englishman has proven that he can perform on a consistent basis and would be ideal in front of the new look defence.

Just in front of him could sit De Jong and Van de Beek. Ten Hag has already spoken about how much he is looking forward to working with Van de Beek again and if he can lure De Jong to Old Trafford they could rekindle their Ajax magic once more.

This formation would also see Fernandes at the front of a diamond midfield playing just behind the two strikers offering United plenty of bite up front.

Forwards – Darwin Nunez, Cristiano Ronaldo

Up front is the tantalising prospect of Nunez and Ronaldo. With Ten Hag keen to give Ronaldo a place in the United lineup, the Dutchman may opt to give him a strike partner to help accommodate him.

Who better to fulfill this role than Nunez who has bagged goals for fun this campaign. Benfica are thought to be ready to sell the forward which could make him the missing piece of United's jigsaw.
