Liverpool needed City to slip up against Villa to have a chance of winning the title, and looked to get that opportunity as Villa took a two goal lead at the Etihad in the second half. Liverpool were drawing at the time, after falling behind, and went on to win 3-1 at Anfield.
That would have been enough to see them win a second Premier League title, but Guardiola's men scored three times in six minutes to earn the three points that saw them win the league in dramatic circumstances. After the game Klopp was gracious in defeat and had a classy message for City.
“Congratulations to Man City, Pep Guardiola, the players, staff and all the supporters, ” he told BBC Sport with a smile.
“It was a tough race, we made it exciting, but you are one point ahead, that makes you champions. Well deserved, you fought hard today, we fought hard.”
Speaking to Sky Sports, Klopp added: “Congratulations to Man City and Pep Guardiola. Thank you to Aston Villa and Wolverhampton for making a proper game of it.
“Its not the result we wanted. It was a bit of a rollercoaster. I dont know the results exactly but I know they were 1-0 up were they 2-0 up as well? Of course at the moment theres disappointment here as well.
“If its 5-0 to City after 10 minutes its just a normal game for us. It wasnt our best game either, but its all good. 92 points is absolutely incredible. We wanted it all, but now its OK.
