News From Manchester: Liverpool FC star Virgil van Dijk snubs Cristiano Ronaldo in dream five-a-side team

Returning to the place where it all began on a global scale last summer, Ronaldo scored 24 goals for United on the back of a sensational move from Juventus. He was one shining light in an otherwise dismal campaign.

Despite question marks over whether he could still cut it at the top level, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner silenced any doubters multiple times over with his performances. His strikes were not enough to inspire United to silverware, but he out-shone long-term rival Lionel Messi following his own high-profile summer switch.

Indeed, the Argentina captain only netted six times during his debut season for Paris Saint-Germain.

However, he was able to celebrate Ligue 1 glory with the club after departing Barcelona last summer. Ronaldo and Messi are regarded among the greatest – if not the two best players in history – but there was no spot for either as Liverpool star Van Dijk jotted down his ideal group for a kick around.

Opting for himself and Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, the other players selected when prompted by Ferdinand on BT Sport show Between The Lines were Manchester City talisman Kevin de Bruyne, Kylian Mbappe from PSG and Karim Benzema (Real Madrid).
