Signed for 50million from AS Monaco, the Frenchman has shown glimpses of his undoubted ability in seven years at Old Trafford. However, they have been few and far between in more recent seasons as Martial prepares to enter a crossroads in his stop-start career.
The 26-year-old was handed an opportunity to force his way back into the United plans – or at least put himself in the shop window – when sent on loan to Sevilla in January. He enjoyed a promising enough start, too, but failed to score in nine appearances as the early-season challengers slipped away from La Liga contention.
A final decision on his Old Trafford future has yet to be made. Should he move on, though, potential suitors will be getting a player who has scored 79 goals and provided 50 assists in 269 outings for United. But does that offer up a true reflection of what the Frenchman is capable of conjuring up?
According to this lofty challenge set by United great – and countryman – Eric Cantona when he signed, the answer would be a resounding no. Speaking about the 30-cap international shortly after he touched down here in the UK, Cantona said: “Martial is France's biggest talent, in three years he'll be worth 100million (85m). Hopefully, he scores many goals for United.”
Upon the conclusion of his loan agreement, Sevilla president Jose Castro said: “Anthony Martial will return to Man United. We spent important money on him, but it didn't work – also he had injuries and we're not going to buy him on a permanent deal.”
