News From Manchester: Rio Ferdinand explains why Man United will succeed with Steve McClaren where David Moyes failed

The 61-year-old will relocate back to Old Trafford as Erik ten Hags assistant this summer. The ex-England manager was Sir Alex Fergusons No.2 from 1999 to 2001, helping the club to win the famous Treble in his debut season.

Ferdinand says those years at United will put this current squad in good stead as ten Hag spies a rebuild. He outlined how David Moyes lacked an experienced team around him during his fateful after Sir Alexs retirement.

Speaking on his Youtube show FIVE, Ferdinand said: He (McClaren) understands the makeup of Man United when they were successful. He still understands what the demands are at the club.

Its like David Moyes comes to Man United. No one on his team knows what its like to be at a club of the magnitude of Man United – then you have to react when you get in there when you havent got an understanding of being at a big club, the size of that club.

He added: I think (McClaren) is a good addition. He knows the steps, knows what a winning culture looks like.
