Owen Hargreaves explains Manchester United’s thinking behind Wout Weghorst transfer

The Reds signed the 30-year-old forward on loan from Burnley until the end of the season, with the Netherlands international having scored nine goals in 18 appearances across all competitions for Besiktas prior to his move. The Turkish club received 2.825million after Weghorst&aposs loan deal was terminated.

Due to the fact he was registered after Friday&aposs lunchtime deadline, Weghorst was unable to play against Manchester City in the derby on Saturday afternoon.

United have been reliant on Marcus Rashford for goals so far this season, and Hargreaves believes Weghorst can help Ten Hag address one of the biggest issues in his squad. The ex-Reds midfielder also compared the Dutchman to former Arsenal and Chelsea striker to Olivier Giroud.

He told talkSPORT: “I know its probably not the sexiest signing in history but the money is not there for Manchester United and they needed a body through the door. Goalscoring has been one of the biggest issues, theyre one of the lowest scoring teams in the top 10 so hopefully he can address that.

“Look at the impact Olivier Giroud has for France thats not the most explosive guy in the world. Hes not Thierry Henry but hes there when they need him. Theyve got enough creators when you think about Casemiro, Bruno, Eriksen and Marcus as well as Antony and Martial. They dont need him to do anything but stand in the box and put the ball in the back of the net.”

Discussing his move to Old Trafford, Weghorst expressed his delight at joining Ten Hag&aposs side, insisted that he would do everything possible to help his new teammates achieve their ultimate goal.

“I feel privileged to be joining Manchester United. Ive played against the club in the past and its a fantastic feeling to now have the chance to pull on the famous red shirt,” he said. “Ive seen Uniteds progress under Erik ten Hag this season and cant wait to start playing my part in pushing the team towards its aims. Whatever happens in the next few months, I can promise to give everything to the club for as long as I am here.

“I thank everyone who has played a part in getting me to this stage, and now I am looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and getting involved straight away.”
