Pep Guardiola discusses Rodri replacements as Man City wait on Jeremy Doku

Rodri is suspended for the trip to the Midlands after picking up his fifth yellow card in the 3-3 draw with Tottenham at the weekend, leaving City with a dilemma they have struggled with before. The Blues lost all three games without their star midfielder earlier in the season while he served a ban for a red card against Nottingham Forest.

Guardiola was not going to brush off the loss of Rodri as they take on a Villa side that have won all six home games in the Premier League this season, but also named multiple options that could step in. As well as Kalvin Phillips, the City manager listed John Stones, Manu Akanji and Nathan Ake as the players who could start off in the holding midfield role and stay there rather than just moving up from defence.
