Real Madrid icon Iker Casillas names Man City’s Ederson among top five goalkeepers

The Los Blancos legend, who retired while at Porto in 2020, unsurprisingly chose current Madrid and ex-Chelsea shot stopper Thibaut Courtois as his number one after lifting the Champions League in May following an incredible performance in the final against Liverpool.

Next on his list is Ederson. The Brazilian has picked up three successive Premier League golden glove awards and has won four titles, an FA Cup and four League Cups since his 2017 arrival from Benfica.

In December, Pep Guardiola agreed with the suggestion that the 29-year-old is one of Citys best ever signings. Eddie is a very important player for us, he said.

I would say the 'keeper is the most important player on the team, more than a striker, the 'keeper is fundamental. Eddie has been brilliant since he came to Manchester.

Controversially, Casillas left out Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson who shared last seasons golden glove and made it to the Champions League final and Chelsea's Edouard Mendy, who was awarded UEFA goalkeeper of the season after last years European triumph.

Instead, the 41-year-old opted for Jan Oblak of Atletico Madrid, Marc-Andre ter Stegen of Barcelona and Germany great Manuel Neuer. Casillas ended his Madrid career with three Champions Leagues, five La Liga, two UEFA Super Cups and a Club World Cup to his name.

He won the 2017/18 Liga NOS title with Porto before announcing his retirement two seasons later to end a 21-year career which contained the 2010 World Cup win and two European Championships successes with Spain.
