Rio Ferdinand sends Manchester United fans transfer warning after Wout Weghorst signing

Both arrived on loans from Crystal Palace and Burnley, respectively, with the latter making his debut against Palace on Wednesday. United needed striker reinforcements after Cristiano Ronaldos November exit but the move for Weghorst surprised many supporters.

The Dutchman – who scored a famous brace against Argentina at the World Cup – netted just twice in 20 Premier League games for Burnley last year.

Before this drab return, though, the attacker had netted 18, 20 and 25 goals for Wolfsburg in the seasons before his move to Turf Moor last January. Ferdinand touched on this when forecasting what impact Weghorst could make at United for the next four months.

He also said he doesnt expect the club to bring in any more additions this month. Speaking to William Hill, he said: I, like many, was a bit surprised when I saw Wout Weghorst join Man United.

He wasnt the most fashionable option, but at this stage of the season we are looking for players that can make an impact. Well have to wait and see how he does, though his goal-scoring record, bar his time at Burnley, is pretty good, so he could easily make a difference.

The centre forward position was the one that needed addressing, so Id be surprised if Erik ten Hag went back into the transfer market. If the perfect player became available then Im sure theyd have the conversation, but those players are hard to find in January.

Weghorst played 69 minutes at Selhurst Park this week and is expected to feature against Arsenal this weekend, be that from the start or the bench.
