Mengi joined newly-promoted Luton Town at the end of the summer transfer window, calling time on a 14-year association with United. The Manchester-born defender joined his boyhood club aged six and played twice for the first-team, making his debut in the Europa League against LASK Linz in 2020.
The 21-year-old was back in Manchester for Luton&aposs Premier League clash against United, a game that ended 1-0 to the home side. But in an awkward moment before kick-off, he seemed to be on auto-pilot as he walked into the home dressing room after greeting security.
In the moment captured on Match of the Day 2, Mengi disappeared towards the home area before swiftly returning out and heading across the corridor. He was able to laugh it off with the guard on the door.
Mengi was not the only former Red returning to Old Trafford on Sunday, with Tahith Chong also a summer arrival at Luton Town. Chong did leave United permanently last summer, spending one season a Birmingham City before getting his chance in the Premier League.
After seeing their side fall to a second-half Victor Lindelof goal, Chong and Mengi shared an embrace with United manager Erik ten Hag and the trio shared some nice words. The former later thanked United fans for their warm welcome back on social media and speaking to United&aposs media team.
