‘We’re excited’ – Getafe director defends loan signing of Mason Greenwood from Manchester United

United concluded their six-and-a-half-month investigation into Greenwood last month and the club announced that &aposit would be most appropriate for him&apos to continue his career away from Old Trafford.

Greenwood signed for Getafe on loan on transfer deadline day and the La Liga club have received criticism, particularly for their social media coverage of the move, with it being suggested their approach has been tone-deaf.

Getafe held an unveiling for the club&aposs three new summer signings, including Greenwood, on Tuesday and 4,000 fans attended.

Rubn Reyes, sporting director at Getafe, has been pressed on the decision to sign Greenwood, but he played down any talk of controversy and instead said the club are delighted to have signed a player like him.

We did what we do: sign players that are available to sign, he said. There is no need for us to handle anything [off the pitch]. We have signed a footballer who is just the same as Diego Rico and scar Rodrguez, and thats it.

“We have to do our job, and thats what we focus on. It is a years loan. Its very difficult to get an option to buy on a player [like him]. He will be here all season. There are internal discussions [between the clubs] but those are small details that we try not to share.

“They [United] appreciated the effort, how convinced we were. Were very excited with him. He was a player that we knew was out there. We worked on it, gathered information and bit by bit we saw that there could be a possibility.

“We spoke to his family, to his dad, to his people for a long time. We were able to convince him to come here, to trust in us. Were satisfied. He plays very free, as if he was on a school playground. He has a very high level.
