What Pep Guardiola got absolutely right in aftermath of Erling Haaland referee controversy

The reigning Premier League champions were made to settle for a point in a high-octane 90 minutes at the Etihad Stadium. However, the action was marred by a huge oversight from referee Simon Hooper.

City were incensed when Hooper – with the score at 3-3 in added-time – blew up for a free-kick when Jack Grealish had been sent through on goal. Hooper had initially waved play on and advantage after Erling Haaland was fouled only to jump up and clip a ball over the top to send Grealish racing clear.

Haaland, 23, will not face FA punishment for for his angry reaction although City have been charged. He made a bee-line for Hooper at the time, cut a frustrated figure at the final whistle and vented his frustrations on social media.

Speaking about that moment, TV pundit Jermaine Jenas told Match of the Day 2 that the restraint showed by the City chief after the game deserved praise: “The response from Guardiola and the players has been brilliant. It&aposs an absolute shocker.”
