Who is Ethan Williams? Manchester United youngster involved in training ahead of Bayern Munich

United hosted an open training session at Carrington on Tuesday morning before flying to Bavaria. Many eyes were on the returning pair of Mason Mount and Raphael Varane, but eagle-eyed viewers also saw Williams included.

This isn&apost the forward&aposs first call-up to first-team training but with Antony and Jadon Sancho both absent, it is a significant chance for the youngster to make a positive impression. The Manchester Evening News has taken a closer look below at his career so far.

Who is Ethan Williams?

Williams was born in 2005 and began his football career at Rochdale. Having worked through the ranks, he joined United at Under-14 level in 2019.

He continued his development at Carrington, initially as a versatile option along the left-hand side but later finding his role on the left-wing. Brilliant performances at Under-18 level earned him a recent call-up to the Under-21s.

How is Williams doing this season?

Still only 17, Williams earned himself a place in United&aposs Under-21 side this season after an excellent campaign with the Under-18s. The forward registered seven goals and eight assists in 23 Under-18 Premier League games last season and was the standout player at that level.

And he started this campaign brightly, getting involved in all four goals as United&aposs Under-21s beat Middlesbrough 4-0. The teenager won a penalty, got two assists and scored a goal for himself back in August, the first of two goals in four Premier League 2 appearances.

Has Williams trained with the first-team before?

Yes, Williams was involved in first-team training in November last year as United prepared for their Carabao Cup clash against Aston Villa. He was just 16 at the time, earning the brief call-up after scoring a brace against Arsenal Under-18s.

But despite being involved in training, Williams was not in the matchday squad for the Villa game.

When could United fans expect to see Williams make the first team?

Williams has shown plenty of promise at youth level and might hope the absence of both Antony and Sancho could help his cause in breaking into the first team. However, it will likely be a while before he makes his debut.
