Wout Weghorst makes Manchester United pledge in message to fans

The Dutchman will don the number 27 as he sees out the rest of the season with the Reds. Alongside Anthony Martial, Weghorst is one of two natural number nines in Erik ten Hags squad and could make his debut against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

He netted nine goals in 18 games for previous club Besiktas, who received 2.6m for agreeing to terminate his season-long loan from parent club Burnley early. United have had to dip into the loan market this month due to limited funds available after spending 225m in the summer.

Weghorst becomes Ten Hags second signing of the month after Jack Butland was loaned in from Crystal Palace following Martin Dubravka&aposs request to end his year-long stay prematurely.

Explaining why he had jumped for Weghorst, Ten Hag said: He is a striker and we had an open position there to fill in. I think in the balance of the offensive [players], he really fits in. I am really happy and I don&apost think we had the type what he is.

Most importantly, he can score goals from everywhere and he was always a surprise at every club in every league. That is also what I expect here. For here, I expect a team player and someone who can link up, a player who will do his defending work and we are really happy to sign him.&apos&apos

Weghorst – who netted 59 Bundesliga goals and 57 Eredivisie strikes before his two his 20 Premier League outings with Burnley last season – took to Instagram to deliver a pledge ahead of his first appearance for United.

Cant wait to get started in The Theatre of my Dreams, he wrote on Sunday evening. I will give my all for this incredible club @manchesterunited. Lets go Reds.

Weghorst said it was a privilege to sign for United upon his unveiling on Friday. He added: Ive played against the club in the past and its a fantastic feeling to now have the chance to pull on the famous red shirt.

“Ive seen Uniteds progress under Erik ten Hag this season and cant wait to start playing my part in pushing the team towards its aims.

Whatever happens in the next few months, I can promise to give everything to the club for as long as I am here. I thank everyone who has played a part in getting me to this stage, and now I am looking forward to meeting my new teammates and getting involved straight away.
