Manuel Neuer, Germany’s goalkeeper, made a historic achievement by making the starting squad against Spain, this evening, Sunday, at Al-Bayt Stadium, in the second round of Group E of the 2022 World Cup.
According to the “Opta” statistics network, this is Neuer’s 18th match in the World Cup, equaling the record of Brazilian Claudio Taffarel and German Sepp Meyer as the most goalkeepers participating in World Cup matches in history.
And the veteran German goalkeeper will be able to break this number, if he participates against Costa Rica in the third round of the group stage.
Spain is at the top of Group E, with 3 points, while Germany is at the bottom of the standings without a score, and it needs to win in today’s meeting in order to hold its fate in its hand, before the last round match.
Spain beat Costa Rica (7-0) in the first round, while the machines suffered a surprising defeat against Japan (2-1).
