Borussia Dortmund will look for a response in the Bundesliga following their Champions League exit to Chelsea in midweek. They make the short trip to Gelsenkirchen to play Schalke in the 100th Revierderby.
Against Chelsea, Julian Brandt suffered a muscular injury and will miss Saturday’s game against Schalke. The 26-year-old has arguably been Dortmund’s best player in 2023 and Edin Terzic will have a big job replacing him. One player that could replace him is American Gio Reyna, who came on against Chelsea. Another option would be Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, who favours the left-flank over the right.
Marco Reus is also a doubt for the game but if he passes a late fitness test, expect the 33-year-old to start as Terzic again opts for a three-man midfield of Emre Can, Salih Özcan and Jude Bellingham with more and more injuries to contend with. Sébastien Haller is expected to keep his place in attack.
After missing Borussia Dortmund’s last two games against RB Leipzig and Chelsea, Gregor Kobel is also expected to start in goal, replacing Alexander Meyer. Julian Ryerson is also expected to return to the squad after a suspension kept him out of BVB’s game against Chelsea.
As well as Brandt, Dortmund will also be without Youssoufa Moukoko and Karim Adeyemi.
Gregor Kobel – Marius Wolf, Niklas Süle, Nico Schlotterbeck, Julian Ryerson – Emre Can – Gio Reyna, Salih Özcan, Jude Bellingham, Marco Reus – Sébastien Haller.
