Today is Lionel Messi’s 35th birthday and he’s celebrating it with his family on vacation in Ibiza. The Argentine will be reflecting on a long and eventful season that saw him leave Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain and lead Argentina to victory in La Finalissima.
Messi didn’t endure a bad season at club level by any means but it was a drop-off in the standards we’ve become used to seeing him meet throughout his storied career. He contributed eleven goals and 15 assists in 34 appearances across all competitions for PSG as they won Ligue 1 but, crucially, failed in the Champions League, losing to Real Madrid.
Messi will hope to spearhead a more impressive campaign next season at the Parc des Princes and help PSG win the first European Cup of their history and his first since 2015. But most important to him will be leading the Argentine national team to glory in the World Cup in Qatar. They’ll be one of the favourites heading to the Middle East.
