Wanderers begin the new League One season this afternoon on the road against Ipswich Town. The Whites are aiming to improve upon a top 10 finish achieved last campaign and be among the challengers for promotion to the Championship.
If such a sustainable challenge is to be made, then undoubtedly a regular source of goals will be needed. Bolton's top scorer last season was Dapo Afolayan with 14 strikes, closely followed by Amadou Bakayoko.
Evatt would like one of his forward players – which also includes the likes of January signings Dion Charles and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson – to step up to the plate and take their goalscoring tally beyond the 20 goal mark. He feels scoring from set plays is an area to improve upon but the Bolton boss has plenty of options in that area of the pitch.
He said: “We would like one of them to step forward and get 20-odd goals because I think if you have got a 20-goal-a-season striker, you have already got a really chance. We would like to think that we have got a really talented group of players who are all capable of chipping in with goals and scoring from all over the pitch.
“Obviously, we need to score from set-plays. That is one of the areas we need to improve. But plenty of options, plenty of goals and hopefully we can go out there and do it.”
One of the players to have caught the eye in pre-season of the Bolton boss is young midfielder Thomason. He believes the 21-year-old has developed physically and has tipped him to have a big impact this campaign.
Evatt said: “He has been one of the highlights of pre-season for me. Physically, he has lived for football 24/7 and what that has done, with his nutrition, his recovery away from the club and the way he trains in the gym and on the grass, he has just blossomed into a real physical specimen.
“Add to that his technical ability, he is a really good technical player. He has really excelled and I believe he is going to be a really big player for us this season.”
