News From Manchester: Lisandro Martinez transfer confirms Manchester United have listened to Daley Blind advice

Martinez was a pivotal part of Ten Hag's team last season having made 36 appearances in all competitions. United's scouting department had recommended that United move for Pau Torres of Villarreal, but the Dutchman pulled rank to get his man through the door.

The arrival of the 24-year-old defender is the latest sign that United have listened to their former player Daley Blind's advice on Ten Hag. Blind played under Ten Hag last season and was Martinez's teammate in Amsterdam.

Back in May, Blind told Bij Andy in de Auto: “Erik ten Hag is a great guy. Its not an easy job, of course, but he doesnt run away from it either. He takes up the challenge. I am quite confident in him at Manchester United but he needs the board behind him.

“At Ajax, he had [Edwin] Van der Sar and [Marc] Overmars behind him whatever happened, also in bad times. I hope he gets the time there, he is one of the best managers around.

“Ten Hag leaves nothing to chance. Sometimes we faced an opponent that we would automatically underestimate and we thought we dont need a 45-minute meeting for this'. But he approaches every single game the same, tactical training sessions. Everything is detailed.”

Of course, the Martinez signing is not the only time this summer that Ten Hag has shown he has the backing of the board in these crucial transfer decisions. The Frenkie de Jong transfer saga is a case in point.
