News From Manchester: Manchester United ‘plan £42m bid for Frenkie de Jong alternative’ and other transfer rumours

Having identified Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong as a priority target this summer, there have been no further breakthroughs with La Liga giants, despite protracted talks. However, there is hope at Old Trafford that their long-standing pursuit will eventually see the Dutchman move to Manchester.

Should the Netherlands international stay at the Camp Nou, mentor and former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag would have to look elsewhere to bolster his limited midfield options. Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez have already been welcomed on board this summer window.

Italian newspaper Messaggero credit United with an interest in Milinkovic-Savic and suggest the Old Trafford outfit could be about to test the waters with Lazio. The 27-year-old has regularly been linked with a move to United and the same report states he is a 'Plan B' option to De Jong.

Lazio are expected to demand closer to 59million for the Serbia international. Milinkovic-Savic joined Lazio seven years ago and has played 294 games for the club.

Elsewhere, reports from Media Foot claim Chelsea are set to enter the race for Benjamin Sesko.

Sesko, 19, has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer as Ten Hag continues to make changes to his squad. It comes amid speculation over Cristiano Ronaldo's future, with the five-time Ballon d'Or winner outlining his intention to leave, despite United insisting that the player will not be sold.

Sesko is currently with RB Salzburg and has emerged as one of the hottest properties in Europe. This has led to the frontman being handed 13 caps for Slovenia as well as having elite clubs such as Chelsea and United monitoring his situation.
